Richard is a leading appellate Senior Counsel specialising in the employment area.
He has been in practice at the New South Wales Bar since 1973, having obtained Masters Degrees from Harvard Law School and Melbourne University Law School. He became a Queens Counsel in 1984.
His practice covers the range of Public and Administrative and Employment Law before Superior Courts. He has regularly appeared as Senior Counsel before the High Court of Australia, over the last 30 years in a range of significant Constitutional and Administrative cases, as well as many cases arising under Federal and State Industrial legislation.
He has frequently been briefed to appear before the High Court in leading cases in the employment and administrative areas.
He has also appeared as counsel for the New South Wales Crown in major wage cases, dealing with Crown employees.
Between 1995 and 2014 he was the Defence Force Advocate appointed under the Defence Act (Commonwealth) to advise the Chief of the Defence Force and to appear on behalf of the ADF before the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal in matters affecting the remuneration of military personnel.
In 2011 Richard was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of distinguished service to the law, particularly in the area of military remuneration.
